About ArchiMeD

ArchiMeD is Mainz University's central data-base for electronic publication of academic theses. Electronic doctoral theses and other academic publications will be registered with the University Library and according to our established standards, hence academics are given a receipt to certify the publication with ArchiMeD. Moreover, the complete electronic texts will be archived and given permanent addresses for internet publication.

In addition to these advantages, electronic publications also contribute to an immediate exchange of information in the fields of scientific and scholarly research. Therefore, we encourage academics at Mainz University to make thorough use of our database for academic writings.

In 1999, ArchiMeD was developed as a joint project by Mainz University Library and Centre for Data Processing. Due to alterations of the rules for obtaining a doctorate in the fields of Mathematics and the Natural Sciences it became possible for a candidate to meet the requirements of submission by submitting an electronic copy of the doctoral thesis. On January 1st, 2000 the "Mainz Archive for Electronic Dissertations" (Archiv Mainzer elektronischer Dissertationen) went online. Today, this database contains academic theses from almost every single field of the various faculties at Mainz University. In mid-2004 OPUS, a new software developed at the University of Stuttgart, was introduced - in co-operation with the University Library Centre (Hochschulbibliothekszentrum) in Nordrhein-Westfalen.
